Review of Thor: Love and Thunder. When the god of thunder answered for the goat

If you remember Avengers : Endgame well, then you know that Thor teamed up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and went to explore the cosmos and himself. The fourth film about Goldilocks promised to shed light on the wanderings of the god of thunder. In addition, Gorr the Godslayer, a cult comic book character, is announced as a villain. After numerous postponements due to the pandemic, Thor: Love and Thunder has finally seen the light of day. I have already seen the picture and am ready to share my impressions.

The director of the tape was already familiar to fans of “Marvel” Taika Waititi (Taika Waititi). Despite tight control from the studio, he managed to bring the author’s style to Thor: Ragnarok, change the image of the main character and make the avenger with a hammer a superstar. The third film was so successful that there was almost no doubt that Thor: Love and Thunder would also be directed by Waititi. In addition, the studio promised the director more creative freedom, which sounded extremely intriguing.

Due to numerous postponements due to the pandemic, the release plan for the films has changed. A similar situation happened with the recent film “Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness” (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) – the film was supposed to be released before the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Spider-Man: No Way Home). As a result, the script had to be changed on the go. In an interview, Waititi honestly said that he was going to make the fourth Thor as self-sufficient as possible, without a strong connection with a single universe.

Marvel wouldn’t be itself if it didn’t spoil all the major characters long before release. So we knew in advance about the appearance of Jane Foster – the former love of Thor, as well as Gorr, whose role was played by the magnificent Christian Bale (Christian Bale).

Comic book connoisseurs are aware that Jane at some point became Thor herself and fought Mjolnir with might and main. However, the story arc of the heroine is quite tragic, which is quite atypical for Marvel. The studio does not like to “load” its viewers with too serious topics, but to adapt Jane’s story differently would mean a complete change in the canon. It was interesting how Waititi would handle such a task.

Also an atypical villain was Gorr, a gloomy butcher who would stop at nothing for the sole purpose of genocide of absolutely all gods ( Kratos approves). The antagonist was not a good fit for a fun and light Thor movie, and after the news of Christian Bale’s involvement, expectations skyrocketed. This gentleman never fails.

Unexpectedly, almost before the release of Love and Thunder, Bale began to actively give interviews, where he said that he did not seriously dive into the character, and agreed to participate only at the request of the children. There was also information that about two hours of running time was cut out of the picture, as well as from the “Multiverse of Madness”, and some scenes had to be re-shot. All this news was disturbing.

Sam Raimi is an excellent director and master of his craft, but his Multiverse of Madness, due to numerous edits, turned out to be chaotic, and in places frankly stupid. Thor is a member of the first line-up of the Avengers, the old man of the franchise. The failure of his solo album fans Kevin Feige (Kevin Feige) just would not be forgiven.

As a result, Waititi showed us exactly the same thing as in Thor: Ragnarok, but with a pinch of the necessary drama. Thor: Love and Thunder has the same pros and cons as the triquel, familiar character designs and a similar style. Good or bad – now we’ll figure it out.

Plot

The trailers were masterfully misleading, showing a buried ax and a meditating Thor. The hero refuses violence literally for a few minutes. Also, the stage of joint adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy and training to return to the previous physical form is quickly passing.

The film runs for two hours, so the story develops rapidly. We get to know Gorr and watch the birth of his motivation – the plot is over. Through the intergalactic Internet, Thor learns about several murders of his brothers and rushes to help.

At the same moment, the Guardians of the Galaxy disappear. Waititi did not lie that he would make the film standalone. Peter Quill and company show up for a couple of minutes to quickly leave on their own business. This is done a little chaotically, after all, changes in the script do not go unnoticed.

Jane Foster is also rapidly added to the plot. As in the comics, the woman has cancer, and the forecasts are not encouraging. Suddenly, the thought comes to her to visit New Asgard. The wreckage of Mjolnir, which Hela broke in Thor: Ragnarok, still rests there. It is not difficult to predict what happens next – the transformation of the heroine has already been spoiled in the trailers.

For no apparent reason, Gorr decides to attack Asgard and kidnap the children, which brings all the characters together.

The story is not particularly surprising, but you can’t call it bad either. It is interesting to watch the new adventures of Thor, although there will be no intensity of passions of the Ragnarok level. This is understandable, because constantly destroying Asgard for the sake of drama is not an option. However, this time around, Waititi decided to focus on the characters. Suddenly there is a lot of talk, emotion and emotion in the film.

Unfortunately, the rumors about the cut scenes turned out to be true. Some events start and end too abruptly. It’s still better than Doctor Strange: Into the Multiverse of Madness, but it looks weird.

In general, the story turned out to be quite good, although in some places it was torn and with all Waititi’s signature features. If you didn’t like in Ragnarok that serious dialogue is now and then interrupted by stupid humor, the film definitely won’t go. The rest can enjoy.

Do you like Thor the joker?

Yes, I’m addicted to this guy’s jokes
Yes, but the character could be a little more serious
No, stupid superhero is not cool
Absolutely not, as if I’m watching KVN

Characters

Review of Thor: Love and Thunder. When the god of thunder answered for the goat
There are so many characters this time that the eyes run wide, but this is perhaps the main drawback of the tape.

The Thor subplot that began in Ragnarok continues. The Space Viking has lost a lot, is tired of fighting and is trying to find a new purpose in life. Sounds great, but looks terrible. The serious image of Thor, formed in the first and second films, did not please the audience. Against the background of the prankster Stark and the witty Captain America, the big man with a hammer was lost and looked boring.

To save the situation, the character decided to change. In Ragnarok, Thor suddenly became a dumb joker who didn’t build logical chains well, but learned to show at least some emotions on his face. Despite the controversial decision, Goldilocks went to the audience, and Chris Hemsworth (Chris Hemsworth) coped well with self-irony.

However, the events that took place in Avengers : Infinity War (Avengers: Infinity War) broke the spirit of the Viking, which also affected his character. This is great in Endgame, but completely lost in Love and Thunder. Thor is the same as in Ragnarok, as if there was no destruction of the home world, the death of Loki and the failure of Thanos. At the same time, there were even more jokes, but their quality, to put it mildly, did not grow.

Sometimes Thor’s stupidity will be so annoying that you will want to skip the next sketch, so the low ratings from critics are understandable. Apparently, Taika Waititi’s excessive creative freedom, like James Gunn, only gets in the way.

But it is worth noting that the character still changes and goes through its own path of development. If you can endure the pandemonium and ostentatious idiocy, you will see the end of the arc that began in Ragnarok. Thor finally understands what could be more important than endless battles, and finds a new purpose in life. The ending generally looks like one of the most powerful and emotional finals among all the Marvel films.

Chris Hemsworth is still great in the role, so it’s obvious that we’ll see the god of thunder more than once in future projects, and that’s a good thing. Thor looks like a far more interesting character than all of the young Marvel heroes put together. His plots are not built around a straightforward agenda, and the director tries, first of all, to tell an interesting story, and not just follow fashion trends.

Ironically, the actor seems to have overdone his fitness level. In some shots, Thor’s face looks just huge, which brings a smile where it doesn’t fit at all.

The second important character was Jane Foster. In previous films, the god of thunder only briefly mentioned the end of their relationship, which caused a lot of questions. Now we have the details. Superheroes are indeed parted, and for the most trivial reasons.

This is definitely a very cool scenario move that turns fairy-tale characters into ordinary people with simple and understandable problems. The love plot can be described as follows: all problems disappear when a girl shares your interests. It looks a little naive, but the Marvel movies have never been famous for deep elaboration of interpersonal relationships.
