Fobia – St. Dinna Hotel . Developers from Pulsatrix Studios were clearly inspired by Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Outlast and other well-known horrors – at the same time, despite borrowing, demos and trailers hinted at something suitable. But what is the novelty actually? I passed Fobia and I hasten to share my impressions!

What is Fobia – St. Dinfna Hotel?
The recent Summer Game Fest proved that the faith of publishers and developers in horror is being revived. Once sensible horror movies almost disappeared from the radar – even Resident Evil turned into a cooperative action game. A couple of years ago, Capcom changed its mind, but a suitable Village can hardly be called a full-fledged horror, because only the episode with Donna Beneviento was scary in it .

Luckily, horror fans can now wishlist a lot of potentially good games: The Callisto Protocol , Dead Space remake , Routine , Fort Solis , Layers of Fears are just some of the upcoming new games.

Plot
The city of Tresi-Trilias is not just considered a strange place – what the hell did not happen here. The researchers found suspicious artifacts. Under unclear circumstances, miners died. Residents complained about an unusual ghost: a child in a gas mask allegedly runs around the district. And many other things in these parts are run by the Sacred Path sect.

The protagonist is an aspiring journalist who decided to deal with the secrets of Trezi Trilias. In addition, a local resident promised to help. Alas, as soon as the guy checked into the St. Dinfna, how things did not go according to plan: the administrator behaved suspiciously, the assistant never showed up, and all the clues led to a dead end. However, that was only the beginning.

When the journalist planned to abandon the investigation and go home, a rift appeared in the bathroom, from which the same ghost child in a gas mask flew out. After that, the hero lost consciousness and woke up almost in hell: the hotel was destroyed, not a soul around, and terrible monsters roam the corridors. What happened? How much time has passed? How to be saved? These are the questions you have to answer.

In general, the story came out decent. The scriptwriters skillfully intrigue, reveal the past of a terrible city and tell curious stories about a ghost and monsters. The most interesting thing is to read the records and listen to the audio cassettes left by the survivors. The poor fellows tried to escape to the last and willingly described their troubles – goosebumps run from some stories.

The investigation process is captivating, and the narration is often delivered not through cutscenes or notes, but directly through the gameplay. Gamers will be allowed to take control of different characters and look at what is happening through their eyes. This approach is great for immersing the story.

Alas, the script is somewhat reminiscent of the legendary TV series Lost. The developers confronted the player with a huge number of secrets, but they could not adequately answer all the questions – as a result, the denouement, of which there are several in the game, does not leave the most pleasant impression. Pulsatrix Studios did not need to come up with an ending on the level of the excellent BioShock Infinite , but it was still not worth it to slide into stereotypes and score on important story arcs.

According to the page on Steam, there is no Russian language in the game – however, in fact, subtitles are available
However, it is still worth closing your eyes to the dubious ending, because most of the passage of Fobia – St. Dinfna Hotel is intriguing and skillfully immerses you in the atmosphere. The path to truth itself turned out to be interesting.

Gameplay
If we compare Fobia – St. Dinfna Hotel with other games, then most of all it resembles Resident Evil 7 . First-person camera, similar animations, chamber locations and a constant sense of threat. Even some of the enemies look like mold, and the local version of Jack Baker is hunting for the hero. Still, it’s not worth comparing the pursuer with the Tyrant – the creature from St. Dinfna Hotel prefers to follow scripts rather than roam freely around the area.

True, the developers have shifted their focus from action to research and solving puzzles – shooting in Fobia is many times less than in Biohazard. For example, the gun falls into the hands of the hero only after about 1.5 hours after the start of the game. Before that, the poor fellow will have to wander around the ruined hotel and tremble with fear.

However, you still have to shoot – huge cockroaches, dangerous mutants and even bosses are waiting on the way. Of course, boss fights can hardly be called outstanding, but they keep it in suspense perfectly. Thanks to the eerie surroundings and the oppressive atmosphere, you go to an important battle as if on a chopping block. It is a pity that usually the devil is not as scary as he is painted.

Still, it is not worth considering opponents harmless. Take at least ordinary monsters who need to shoot strictly in the chest: at first they seem to be slow wimps, but if you gape, they will make an unexpected breakthrough and punish you for your mistake. At a time like this, it’s hard not to cringe in fear.
