A “war” has begun in Hollywood for the rights to Tomb Raider. Sequel with Alicia Vikander canceled
Hollywood movie companies and streaming services are vying for the film rights to Tomb Raider. They have been owned by MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) for the past nine years, but have now returned to producer Graham King and GK Films.
In 2018, MGM relaunched the franchise with Tomb Raider: Lara Croft starring Alicia Vikander. Filming of the second part was supposed to begin before May 2022, but this did not happen, which is why MGM lost the rights. Now intellectual property will pass into other hands.
Sources add that another reboot is waiting for the saga, so Vikander is unlikely to return to the main role. Tomb Raider: Lara Croft grossed $275 million worldwide.
Recall that in May, Square Enix sold the rights to Tomb Raider and Deus Ex to the Embracer Group holding.
